At our April meeting we had a visioning session for the area around the McCoart Center. The general consensus was that the McCoart area should become a true County Center- a gathering place for a variety of reasons. We look forward to everything from concerts to passive recreation to competitive sports to fairgrounds- type programs. Here are the ideas from the meeting (with the inspiration for some in parentheses):
1) Passive Park - Trails
2) Fairgrounds Programs Transferred From Current Fairgrounds
A. Farm Field Days
B. 4-H Programs
C. Quilting
D. Youth Programs - Home Arts
E. County Mini - Fair
F. Eagle Scouts Programs
3) Senior Day Care, Lifelong learning, Non Profit Program Space
4) Active Recreation- Ball Fields
5) Concerts In Connaughton Plaza (Harris Pavilion)
6) Nature Center
7) Artists Center (Lorton Workhouse)
8) Summer Day Camp
9) Landscaped Park (Central Park, NY)
10) Small Skate Park- Skate Boards
11) Mini-Golf
12) Frisbee Golf
Not all these items would necessarily be placed on the property- they're just examples of what might make sense there. It was the strong consensus that the privately owned 55 acre parcel should be added to the public area. The price for this land has been prohibitively high in the past, but if prioritized for acquisition some solution might be found- possibly a land-swap or other creative solution. This parcel is key to a cohesive plan for the overall area.
